What Is a Psychoeducational Assessment?
A psychoeducational assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that looks at how a person learns. It measures cognitive ability, academic skills, and the underlying processes, such as memory, attention, and processing speed, that shape how someone takes in and uses information. The goal is to understand why learning feels harder than it should and to map a clear path forward.
For many students, a psychoeducational evaluation is the first time their strengths and challenges are seen clearly, rather than being explained away as not trying hard enough.
When to Consider a Psychoeducational Evaluation
Families often seek a psychoeducational evaluation when a bright student keeps hitting walls, when grades do not match the effort being put in, or when a school suggests testing for an IEP or 504 plan. It can also clarify whether a learning disability, attention difference, or processing difference is contributing to academic struggles.
- Reading, writing, or math that is harder than expected
- Trouble with focus, organization, or finishing work
- A gap between ability and academic performance
- Preparing for school accommodations or an IEP or 504 plan

A full psychoeducational assessment at OC NeuroDx includes cognitive and academic achievement testing, identification of specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia or dyscalculia, an evaluation of processing and memory, and documentation suitable for an IEP or 504 plan. Every evaluation ends with a 60-minute feedback and recommendations session where Dr. Bell explains the findings in plain language.
Who We Evaluate
Psychoeducational evaluations are available for school-age children, adolescents, and college students. OC NeuroDx evaluates students starting at age 5. Dr. Bell has particular experience with students whose learning differences were missed because they are capable and have learned to compensate, including twice-exceptional students who are both gifted and learning different.
What Happens After
You receive a comprehensive written report and a feedback session that translates the results into practical next steps. The report can support requests for school accommodations, an IEP or 504 plan, tutoring, or other targeted support. You decide who sees the report and what you share.
